Summer Struggles

For many of us, summer is an exciting time. It means cookouts, vacations, and longer sunny days. But for many of our clients, summer presents it’s own unique challenges.

Low-income working families:

  • Grocery bills increase due to children being out of school and eating at home.

  • Summer child care costs add to monthly expenses.

  • Utility bills are higher due to running the AC and more family members being home during the day.

  • Conway is a city of colleges and many of our low-income families are employed through seasonal work at colleges and the school system.

Homeless neighbors:

  • Dangerously hot temperatures without shelter put people at risk of health threats like heat stroke and severe sunburn.

  • Limited access to showers, cool drinking water, and refrigeration so food doesn't spoil in the heat makes daily survival difficult.

  • Walking to employment becomes even more difficult, making it hard to keep a job and show up clean and hygienic.

  • Homeless families face even greater challenges trying to gain employment with all their children out of school.
